From New York to Seoul: Runaway Bunny in Seoul

30 November, 2015 07:52  Erin Erin

runaway bunny in seoul Hi I’m Alana (or Alana Margaret), former New Yorker, current Seoulite.

1. Why did you move abroad?
While my husband was in business school he received an offer from a Korean company. After a lot of discussion, talking with people who had done the program he’s doing now and talking to friends who had taught in Korea, we decided the opportunity to live abroad and easily travel around Asia wasn’t one we wanted to miss.

From New York to New Zealand to the UK: Collecting Labels

23 November, 2015 12:03  Erin Erin

Collecting Labels My name is Laura and I'm originally from New York. After graduating from college I left for what was supposed to be a gap year. It's been over five year since I've had a permanent address in the US! In that time I've lived in New Zealand, Australia and South Korea. I'm currently spending a few months in the UK visiting my partner's family and trying to figure out where to go next!

1. Why did you move abroad?
It was kind of an accident. I was working in New Zealand to save up some money to travel around and I kind of decided not to leave. I spent just over a year there and I was hooked!

From Brisbane to Bogota: Sarepa

16 November, 2015 13:22  Erin Erin

Sarepa My name is Sarah Duncan, but people call me Sarepa (I'm addicted to arepas). I'm from Australia, but split my time between Brisbane and Bogota, Colombia.

1. Why did you move abroad?
The first time I decided to live in Colombia was after many years of travelling to the country. I had fallen in love with the place through the work of famed Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez and wanted to live out my own dream of living in Colombia and writing about my own experiences. I made that decision in 2012 and was shocked by how my parents reacted. "Thank goodness!" my mum said. "You've been wanting to do that for ages!"

From Pittsburgh to Seoul: Willful and Wildhearted

09 November, 2015 12:34  Erin Erin

Willful and Wildhearted I’m Laura. I’m a 27-year-old Pittsburgh-native living in Seoul, Korea. I like pizza, Chuck Norris jokes and the band Phish.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I decided to seriously move abroad after a series of traumatic events in my life. I had always contemplated the idea of teaching or volunteering abroad, but the timing was never right. Within a year’s time, my brother died, my grandmother died, I was the instigator in a necessary yet traumatizing end of a relationship and I suddenly became jobless. So like any sane human being, I decided I needed to find somewhere to heal, far
away from any friends and family. I enrolled in a TEFL practicum and moved to Seoul, Korea a few months after the madness ended.

From Cumbria to Bulgaria: The Travel Bug

02 November, 2015 11:02  Erin Erin

The Travel Bug Blulgaria Hi, I'm Rachel Gawith (known as thetravelbug), originally from Cumbria, in north of England but moved to Bulgaria in October 2006. Its been a love-hate relationship with Bulgaria from the day I moved here, with nothing going to plan, trials and tribulations and a long haul to get the to the place we are now.

1. Why did you move abroad?
It was as never the plan to move over to Bulgaria, or indeed abroad. I originally just put a deposit down on a ski apartment in Bansko in 2004, when there was all the hype about buying here (yep I fell for one of those adverts). That went rather pear-shaped and I pulled out of the purchase and after a court case and many visits to the developer's office in Bulgaria, I got my money back. But by then I had fallen in love with Bulgaria and started to come over regularly, often helping others organise viewing trips to see property. Over the next year or two, I ended up buying a number of properties here as investments, just because they were cheap (we live and learn!) and to renovate.

From Chicago to London: Escapist Atlas

26 October, 2015 11:48  Erin Erin

Escapist Artist My name is Jeremy and I’m originally from Chicago, Illinois. Currently I live in London with my fiancé. We both moved about a year ago and have been exploring and getting to know the city and country
ever since.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I've wanted to live abroad since I was around 19 and did a study abroad program.  It sounds cliche, but it really developed my interest for travel and exploration.  After graduating from college and working in Chicago for a while, I saw that some companies opened up opportunities to move people internally all over the world.  I knew that I wanted to do that.

From England to Singapore: MR E in Singapore

19 October, 2015 09:38  Erin Erin

MR E Singapore Hi, I’m Jason, alternatively known as Mr E thanks to my job. I’m originally from Dartford in England. I moved to Singapore in August 2014 with my partner.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I was 29 when I moved here, living with parents and having struggled for the previous 5 years to make any significant progress in saving for a deposit. With teachers in the UK being hit year on year with a pay freeze (now entering its fifth year), and the cost of living ever increasing I began looking for alternative options. A few interviews passed and a few months later I had flight booking confirmed and the move was on!

From the USA to Canada to the Netherlands: Diary of an Urban Housewife

12 October, 2015 11:09  Erin Erin

urban housewife amsterdam Hi! I’m Kate, an American expat currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We are fairly nomadic as we have moved around quite a bit having lived in 8 different cities in the U.S. before moving to Vancouver, B.C. in Canada to give the whole “expat” thing a try, once we realized we liked it we knew Europe was next!

1. Why did you move abroad?
We moved abroad for my husbands work. He is a video game producer (every little boys dream haha) , so when one project ends we usually move, well when his project ended in Canada I said I would only move again if we went to Europe...it had always been my dream to live in Europe and get the opportunity to show our daughter Europe.

From Arizona to Dublin: Desert to Dublin

05 October, 2015 10:52  Erin Erin

desert to Dublin I am Megan of Desert to Dublin and my family of five (seven, if counting the labradoodles) has recently relocated from Tucson, Arizona, USA, to Dublin, Ireland.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Our decision to move abroad was prompted by a need for a lifestyle change.  Roughly a year ago the travel demands my husband was facing at work had become overwhelming for all.  We reflected on a time and place where we’d been happier as a family and concluded our time spent in Melbourne, Australia, as expats nearly a decade ago, had been our ideal arrangement.  After arriving at this realization, my husband began applying for a variety of phd programs, and though domestic programs were also explored, it was ultimately UC Dublin that most caught our attention.  After all options were presented and discussed as a family (children included), we determined Dublin was the right path for us.

From Michigan to Rio de Janeiro: My Quarter Life Epiphany

28 September, 2015 10:30  Erin Erin

Quarter life crisis brazil Hi! I’m Steph, originally from the tiny town of Lowell, Michigan. Now I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil since October 2015, and before that was in Bangkok, Thailand for 2 years.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I didn’t really move abroad, I just never left. I had taken a one week vacation for my first overseas trip to Thailand, and fell in love with the country and decided to make a new life there. So I stayed, based in Bangkok for 2 years while I traveled throughout Southeast Asia.
For the move to Rio, my fiancé and I decided we’d like to try something new. We wanted to move away from the concrete jungle and live somewhere with more nature. He received an offer to work for the 2016 Olympics, so we moved to Zona Sul of Rio de Janeiro.
