From California to Italy to Sweden: Niche Travel Design

28 May, 2018 09:37  Erin Erin

Niche TravelI am Shelley Jarvis. I grew up in Northern California in the wine country. I first moved as an expat to Italy. I currently live in Sweden.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I am an explorer by nature and I was restless living in a perfect suburban town. I always wanted to live abroad and I wanted my children to live abroad. My theory was that the world is becoming more global by the minute and I wanted my kids to feel comfortable living in the world. I have a friend who told me she is afraid to travel because she doesn’t know another language and she would feel unsafe. I did not want my children to be afraid of the world. I wanted them to learn about and live in another culture and to learn another language. I saw it as a bit of an insurance policy for their futures as they would have more options when it came to job hunting.

From the USA to Colombia: Medellin Guru

21 May, 2018 07:59  Erin Erin

Medellin Guru My name is Jeff. I was born in California but I lived in several states in the U.S. and also lived overseas in Indonesia for five years when I was young.

I was living in Dallas, Texas in the U.S. before I moved to Medellín, Colombia. I have now lived in Medellín for over seven years.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I originally discovered Colombia back in late 2006, when I was living in Dallas and looking for a new vacation place.  I was looking for someplace warm to go, as this was during the winter.  Cartagena was the first place I discovered in Colombia.

How I discovered Colombia? I happened to buy a book “100 Places to See in Your Lifetime: Heaven on Earth” published by Life magazine. And two places in the book caught my eye as possible vacation places – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Cartagena, Colombia.

From Indonesia to Russia: Sightseer's Diary

14 May, 2018 13:38  Erin Erin

Sightseer's Diary My name is Eva. I was born in an exotic country, where you can find coconut trees everywhere – Indonesia. Then I moved to a faraway country covered in snow in the winter – Russia. This is my fourth year living in Moscow, the capital city that will soon be the host of the world's most exciting event – the FIFA World Cup 2018!

1.    Why did you move abroad?
My husband is one of the reasons I moved to Russia. We both decided to live and work hard in Russia first, then maybe in the future, once he has more resources, we shall move to a warm, sunny country. The other reason I moved was because I wanted to learn Russian. I am a language lover and living in Russia is a great opportunity for me to learn something new.

From the UK to Cape Town to Nairobi: The Expat Mummy

07 May, 2018 08:45  Erin Erin

Expat Mummy I am Nadine Murphy. I’m a British mum living in Nairobi, Kenya… though I’ve just come from living in Cape Town for 6 years.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I moved to Cape Town to be with my husband who had a great expatriate job opportunity. My first child was just 3 months old and the assignment was just to be two years.  We thought it a great opportunity to be able to spend time just being a mum. Our twins were born 12 months later and we ended up staying in Cape Town. After 6 years my husband was offered the dream chance to open his own office in Kenya and we jumped at the chance to experience more of Africa.

From Canada to Bali: Healing Pilgrim

23 April, 2018 08:07  Erin Erin

Amit Healing Pilgrim Hello! My name is Amit and I’m originally from Montreal, Canada. I’ve lived in Bali, Indonesia since 2011.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I never consciously decided to move overseas; least of all to the other side of the world. Two years after surviving a near-death accident while traveling around Asia in 2009, I had returned to Asia when I took a brief detour to Bali. I’d heard about the recoveries that others had made with the help of traditional healers, natural remedies, local massage practitioners and intense yoga practice. So I came to pursue further physical healing; but I also stayed on to care for my mind and spirit as well.

From Maine to Brazil to UAE back to the USA: Whole-hearted Traveler

16 April, 2018 08:25  Erin Erin My name is Stacey and I am from Maine.  I moved abroad to work as an international teacher.  I lived in Brazil, Senegal, Argentina, and the U.A.E. After 10 years, overseas, I returned to the U.S.  and have been going through the transition of repatriation.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I moved back to the U.S. because I wanted to make a career change and obtain a master’s degree.  I was very sad to leave my expat life behind and return to the U.S. so I decided to move to a new city. That way it would still feel new and exciting and I could still explore new places.  I choose to move to Austin, Texas which turned out to be great, perhaps too great!  Right away I meet my now partner which has been awesome however he wanted to get his Ph.D. and we ended up moving to a Denton, which is a small college town in Texas.

This has been an interesting move for me, although I am accustomed to moving in the past all the decision we’re mine because I was single.   Now I have moved because of another person’s purpose to a not so exotic place to live.

From the Netherlands to Italy: Living in Italy

09 April, 2018 09:41  Erin Erin

Living in Italy Hi, I am Stef Smulders, 57 years old and I moved ten years ago from The Netherlands to Italy with husband and dog. I now live in the small village Montecalvo Versiggia in the Oltrepò Pavese wine region, 50 miles south of Milan in Lombardy, where we have our B&B Villa I Due Padroni.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I was doing a master in Medieval Culture and was supposed to study half a year abroad, for which I chose the university of Pavia. But, secretely, we were already considering a permanent move as we dreamt of starting an bed and breakfast.

2.    How do you make a living?
We earn our money with our B&B. Hosting guests is a fantastic experience in which you meet a lot of nice people.
