From the UK to Vancouver to Sydney: In Search of a Life Less Ordinary

15 August, 2011 09:35  Erin Erin

less ordinary couple I’m Russell, a British expat currently living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in New South Wales, Australia. Originally from the UK, I left home in 2003 and emigrated to Vancouver, Canada before moving to Ottawa several years later. In 2006, I left Canada for my wife’s home city of Sydney in Australia.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I moved abroad in search of a different way of life, away from the hum drum of the 9-5 work routine and weekends spent in shopping malls or nursing the obligatory Sunday morning hangover in front of the television. I wanted to experience life rather than just live it and so went looking for a lifestyle surrounded by natural beauty and full of new experiences.
Australia offered something that I could only ever enjoy for a few weeks of the year in England whilst on my summer holiday. Australia offers a laidback way of life, with increased family time spent outside and more of a focus on the kinds of things to do away from work rather than a focus on the day job itself. (More)

De Paris à Sydney: Aussie Post

02 June, 2011 09:06  Erin Erin

From California to New South Wales: Surviving OZ

30 May, 2011 10:02  Erin Erin

surviving OZ self-portrait My name is Lisa, and I’m a Southern Californian transplanted to regional New South Wales in Australia.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I first came to Australia for a 3 month working holiday…that was over 9 years ago, and since then, love, marriage, twins and citizenship have all happened!

2. How do you make a living?
I’ve had a number of jobs since I moved here – at first I was doing the usual working traveller waitressing job, but eventually got a more permanent position in graphic design (my degree is in Fine Art) and a few years ago I made a career change to become a librarian. I have to say, working in Australia is awesome – I don’t think I’ve ever been employed somewhere without fun co-workers (the whole stereotype about fun loving Aussies? Totally true!). (More)
