From Indonesia to Scotland to Australia: Finally Woken

10 December, 2012 08:41  Erin Erin

finally woken Anita McKay is a trailing spouse who loves traveling, food, cat, photography and architecture, although not necessarily in that particular order. Born and bred in Indonesia, she went to Sydney, Australia, to finish her master’s degree  – her first taste of being an expat – before going back to Indonesia to work. In 2007 she moved to Aberdeen, Scotland, got married, and settled there for more than 2 years. Just right at the time when she started to understand the Scottish accents, she and her husband had to move again to the most isolated city in the world. She’s been living in Perth, Australia, since November 2009 with her husband and Xander, their 1 year-old cat that’s also a known as the lizard hunter.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I met my then-boyfriend when both of us were working in Indonesia. After 3 years he decided to take a job back in Aberdeen, Scotland, and asked me to move with him. It took me a year before I decided to leave Indonesia and move to Scotland.

From the USA to Auckland: Practically Perfect...

06 August, 2012 11:47  Erin Erin

Practically Perfect Jenny Tucker – originally from the US, currently living in Auckland, New Zealand

1. Why did you move abroad?
My husband was looking for career opportunities, and we both agreed that we would consider certain countries outside of the US.  We saw one that was being advertised by a New Zealand employer and as the job was very much in line with his interests and expertise, he applied.  He was flown over for an interview, loved the job, really liked the city, and so was happy to accept once they made an offer.

From San Francisco to Brisbane: Pieces of Wendy

23 July, 2012 09:20  Erin Erin

pieces of wendyOriginally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Wendy is a freelance writer and American expat living in Brisbane, Australia. She first moved down under in 2003 after a nasty case of the travel bug drove her to take a long break from college to explore Europe and then Australia. A number of years filled with umming and ahing over what to do with her life took her to various parts of Australia, including an extended stay in Tasmania. In 2006 she finally decided to study journalism and knuckled down with her nose in the books. She left Brisbane for Houston, Texas at the end of 2008 where she worked as a journalist and freelance writer. A couple years later she (and her Brisbane-born fiancé who dragged her to Houston in the first place) returned to Brisbane and is happy to be back––despite her hankering for a decently priced Cadillac margarita on the rocks!

From the UK to Vancouver to Sydney: In Search of a Life Less Ordinary

15 August, 2011 09:35  Erin Erin

less ordinary couple I’m Russell, a British expat currently living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in New South Wales, Australia. Originally from the UK, I left home in 2003 and emigrated to Vancouver, Canada before moving to Ottawa several years later. In 2006, I left Canada for my wife’s home city of Sydney in Australia.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I moved abroad in search of a different way of life, away from the hum drum of the 9-5 work routine and weekends spent in shopping malls or nursing the obligatory Sunday morning hangover in front of the television. I wanted to experience life rather than just live it and so went looking for a lifestyle surrounded by natural beauty and full of new experiences.
Australia offered something that I could only ever enjoy for a few weeks of the year in England whilst on my summer holiday. Australia offers a laidback way of life, with increased family time spent outside and more of a focus on the kinds of things to do away from work rather than a focus on the day job itself. (More)

De Paris à Sydney: Aussie Post

02 June, 2011 09:06  Erin Erin
