From England to Spain: This is Alicante Life

08 December, 2014 09:17  Erin Erin

alicante life My name is Sarah Berenguer and I am originally from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England.  I currently live in Alicante city in Spain and have been here for 10 years now.

1. Why did you move abroad?
My dad was born the old town in Alicante and moved to England when he was young, but he never taught me Spanish or spoke to me about the culture as I was growing up.  I was curious as I got older so decided to take evening classes while working in London to learn the language.  I went on holiday a few times to Alicante and enjoyed my visits, especially one particular time during the local fiestas of San Juan, or also known as Las Hogueras.  I had no ties to London (apart from a fantastic job in a design team renovating luxury hotels) and I decided to take the plunge and try living here.  I set myself up with a job before moving over and as soon as I arrived enrolled in a language school to learn as quickly as possible.

From Australia to Portugal: Warneys Whip

27 October, 2014 09:47  Erin Erin

Warneys Whip My name is Sarah Warne, but in Australia I’m known as Warney. Here in Portugal, where I moved to 4 years ago, I’m known as “Sara”, and I gave up trying to get people to pronounce SARAH, and the Warney nickname I don’t think will be one that will catch on.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Originally I headed over to Portugal to find my mum a Lustiano, which is the Portuguese national horse, and after finding her horse, I stumbled across Batialo; future best mate and love of my life. After that, I kept telling mum I would stay just one more month, just one more month, and Batialo kept getting bigger and better, and one day I decided I was going to stay here and one day make the Olympics!

From Maryland to Bergen: An American in Norway

29 September, 2014 08:47  Erin Erin

An American in Norway Wife, empty-nester mom, daughter, sister, aunt ... student, teacher ... friend ... freelance musician, web designer, and virtual assistant ... pet devotee ... traveler, expat ... volunteer ... hooked on historical fiction and advice columns ... never too far away from my Spotify and iPod playlists ...

I'm Cindi, a fifty-six year old American in Norway. I've lived in nine States in the U.S., but consider Maryland my U.S. home; I lived there for fifteen years before moving to Norway.

All those hats I wear, and where I've lived in this world, come together and affect my writing in my blog at cindi-keller.com.

1. Why did you move abroad?
My Norwegian husband had a company in the U.S. when we first met. When his work took him back to Norway, I joined him in 2007.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Well this is quite a long story so get a warm blanket and some hot tea ;) Kidding aside, here is the short version: I was working in Romania (in Iasi) in a corporation that had one of its main branches in Poland (in Krakow). The Team Leader from Krakow proposed I would come and give it a try. I said that I would do it for 6 months and then travel further on - I had even a plan for the UK/Ireland. Then Mr. Rosiek jumped in the picture and I stayed :)

From Scotland to Spain: Guiri Girl in Barca

25 August, 2014 09:58  Erin Erin

guirigirlbarca Julie Sheridan is a Scottish copywriter, poet and blogger who quit her home and career in Edinburgh in spring 2011 to follow a lifelong dream of achieving fluency in Spanish. She’s been ensconced in the Catalan capital ever since, getting eaten alive by mosquitos who feast on rare Celtic blood. She is also a Trustee of Latin American street children’s charity Casa Alianza UK.

1. Why did you move abroad?

With one sole goal – to become fluent in Spanish. I had studied it at university and had been in love with the language since I first heard Gloria Estefan singing in her native Spanish in the late 1980s. After graduating and starting a professional career in Edinburgh, I had very little opportunity to practise my Spanish, and in my early 30s I decided there was nothing for it but to quit my life in Scotland and head south.

From the USA to Hungary: The Great Escape

28 July, 2014 09:15  Erin Erin

Great Escape Hello, my name is Jennifer. Most people call me Jen, a few call me Jennifer, and only a handful are allowed to call me Jenny. The newest addition to the mix is “Miss Jennifer.” I am from the United States – I was born in North Carolina, but was raised in Georgia. I currently live in Budapest, Hungary.

1. Why did you move abroad?

Ever since I was little, I have equated Europe with happiness. I am not an emotional person, but the one thing I would always cry about (with the exception of Sarah McLachlan dog videos) is thinking I would never have the chance to move abroad. I finally stopped crying and made my dreams come true. Traveling is a hunger I shall never satisfy.

1. Why did you move abroad?
The decision to move to Germany came when I decided I wanted to pursue a master’s degree, after feeling stuck in my job. I had been searching and spontaneously applied to a few universities, but when this admission letter arrived, I knew it was packing time.

From Romania to the Netherlands: Amsterdamming

23 June, 2014 13:43  Erin Erin

amsterdamming My name is Andra and I am from Bucharest, Romania. I moved to Amsterdam in Summer 2010 and have been living here ever since. Amsterdam is giving me peace of mind, inspiration and the impulse to photograph and share the way I see it. You may find my personal interpretation of this beautiful city on my blog, Amsterdamming.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I live in the Netherlands by pure chance. Before moving here, I had never imagined I would call this country home one day and I hardly knew anything about it apart from some clichés. What brought me to Amsterdam was a series of separate events which eventually came together - just like the pieces of a puzzle - to create the “picture” I am currently living in.  (More)

From New Zealand to England and back again: Sandysviews

16 June, 2014 10:39  Erin Erin

Sandysviews I'm Sandy of Sandysviews blog. Sandy isn't a girls name, Sandi is a girls name. Sandy is the Scottish abbreviation of Alexander which is my real name, but everyone calls me Sandy. I'm a New Zealander who spent 22 years in England.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I was going to go travelling when I left the army, but I didn't. Instead I waited until I should have been settling down and buying a house. I went abroad because I felt like I'd made a mess of everything in New Zealand. I ran away to see what I could make out of a life overseas.
