From Atlanta to Madrid: Pass the Ham

01 October, 2012 10:47  Erin Erin

Pass the Ham Hello there! So, I’m Hamatha (ok, Nicole) and I’m originally from Atlanta, Georgia. I moved to Madrid in 2006 and have been expatting it every since. (Does that sound a little dirty?)

1. Why did you move abroad?
Well, I’ll give you the short version because I tend to dramatically go on and on about this. I studied in Madrid when I was in college. I was here for about 6 weeks and then, I took some time to travel around Europe. And as the saying goes, I truly found myself in Europe, meaning that I truly found myself liking not working, truly found myself drinking beer at lunch and, quite often, truly found myself pretending I was a cool international spy.

20 September, 2012 10:55  Erin Erin

pines of rome tiffany My name is Tiffany Parks. I was born and raised in Seattle and completed my studies in Boston and Montréal. I have been living in Rome for the past 8 years.

1. Why did you move abroad?

From the time I was a little girl and I first learned that I had Italian blood (albeit just a quarter) I knew I was destined to live in Italy. I can’t explain how I knew, let’s just say that my entire life I felt led to move here, until I could no longer ignore the urgings anymore, and I just came.

13 September, 2012 10:52  Erin Erin

paula american. a broad. Paula. From Florida to England.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I met a wonderful man and we decided to take the plunge and get married. I always saw myself living in another country and everything seemed to be lining up to make it happen so I made the move.

2. How do you make a living?

I was very fortunate to be able to use some recent contacts I had in the music industry and land a job 2 weeks after I moved. I wasn't planning on it happening so soon, but it did! I work at some of the biggest music festivals in the UK as well as help run a vintage vinyl shop in the heart of Liverpool. Pretty much my dream job.

From New York City to Moscow: Impressions of an Expat

23 August, 2012 10:34  Erin Erin

Marco from New York, now living in Moscow.Impressions of an expat marco

1. Why did you move abroad?
I am an involuntary expat, as my daughter was kidnapped from the USA to Russia when she was two. That was five years ago. I could not imagine being separated from her, so life for the foreseeable future is in Moscow.

2. How do you make a living?
I run an International creative agency and design studio out of the USA, where I had worked for about twenty years. Every job is different. Every client is different. I work in about 14 time zones, and never know what people are going to ask me to create – one day a viral film, the next a children’s toy.

From the USA to China to Singapore to Paris: Expat Edna

20 August, 2012 10:24  Erin Erin

expat edna I’m Edna, an American and serial expat. I first moved abroad at 18, then two weeks after graduating university in 2010, I left the US for good. I have lived and worked in China and Singapore, and am currently based in Paris.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Different reasons each time. At 18, I moved to China for a year and a half as a break from my small-town college life and to broaden my horizons. At 21, I moved to Singapore on a whim because I had just graduated and knew that I didn’t want to stay in the US. In January of this year, I moved to Paris to follow an opportunity to further my career.

From Paris to London: Britishette

09 August, 2012 10:07  Erin Erin

Britishette Hi I’m Jo, aka Britishette on my blog. I’m a 33 year old Parisian girl who loves to move around. With my Austrian hubby Chris, we lived in Seattle, New York, Vienna, Tokyo and Paris. As our little girl Stella turned 1, we packed our bags again and crossed the channel to experiment the London life. Can’t believe how things are different just a train ride away!

1. Why did you move abroad?
I love to live abroad. I am so curious about the daily life of people in other countries. I get excited just visiting the supermarket. So when my husband was asked to relocate to London for work, I didn’t hesitate for one second. We had been in England before, but never to live, and I think it is such a different experience to settle in a new country. The love of football, of crazy fashion and pubs convinced us to get on the Eurostar. (More)

From Virginia to Norway: A Suitcase and Stilettos

30 July, 2012 10:39  Erin Erin

Suitcase and Stilettos mountain

My name is Megan Starr…I am originally from Virginia but now live in beautiful Norway.  My Norwegian home is in just as much of an identity crisis as my American life was.  I spend my time in between Bergen and Oslo.  Two homes is better than one, right?

1. Why did you move abroad?
On a random July night in Las Vegas a couple years back I met a Norwegian boy.  Let's just say that not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. :)

2. How do you make a living?
Yikes.  Well, I have had a pretty lousy experience with the UDI (Norwegian immigration services department) and despite having quite a lot of education, I have not been able to obtain a work visa in the country just yet.  So…I spend my time freelancing.  UDI's solution to my problem?  "Just get married".  Oh the joys of being an expat!

From Massachusetts to Madrid: Spanish Sabores

19 July, 2012 09:42  Erin Erin

Spanish sabores portrait My name is Lauren Aloise and I am originally from a small town in Central Massachusetts, US. I have been living in different parts of Spain for the past three years, and have finally settled in Madrid with my husband.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I’d dreamed of living abroad since I was a child, always reading books about travel and adventure. I thought I could kill the wanderlust with two semesters of study abroad in college, but it was still there at graduation. So I rejected the 9-5 I’d been planning for, got my TESOL certification and applied for the Spanish government’s language assistant program. I planned to live in Spain for a year or two and then return to the US or travel to another country. But things got complicated when I met my Spanish husband-- I’m now an official Spanish resident and long-term expat!
