From the USA to Kenya: One Trailing Spouse
Erin

Hi, I'm Emily. I'm a writer, reader, traveler, and trailing spouse from the U.S. My husband and I met as Peace Corps volunteers in Vanuatu (in the South Pacific). After he and I had worked for a few years and gone to grad school, he was offered his dream job. I left my [albeit crappy] job to follow him on his career path. We're currently living in Nairobi, Kenya.
1. Why did you move abroad?
The short answer: for my husband's job. The longer answer: he and I have both spent quite a bit of time abroad (as students and as Peace Corps volunteers). We enjoy living in foreign countries and so we were excited when he got his current position, which involves a lot of international travel and the potential to live abroad. When he got the chance to work in Nairobi, we were very excited.

My name is Adrian. I am from a small island outside of Seattle. I grew up in a world of beach bonfires and bustling coffee shops, surrounded by mountains, trees and the Puget Sound. Currently, I call Istanbul home. Istanbul is a city of beautiful chaos, incredible hospitality and constant activity.
1. Why did you move abroad?
During college, I spent one semester in London. Every day was a new adventure. I had friends from all over the world and I travelled on a regular basis. The moment I returned to US soil, I felt inhibited and yearned to return to life in a global city. As I approached my college graduation, I was full of wanderlust. I purchased a one-way ticket to Istanbul. I came with the intention to live in Turkey for a year. Three years later I am still here…

1. Why did you move abroad?
From the time I was a little girl and I first learned that I had Italian blood (albeit just a quarter) I knew I was destined to live in Italy. I can’t explain how I knew, let’s just say that my entire life I felt led to move here, until I could no longer ignore the urgings anymore, and I just came.

Paula. From Florida to England.
1. Why did you move abroad?
I met a wonderful man and we decided to take the plunge and get married. I always saw myself living in another country and everything seemed to be lining up to make it happen so I made the move.
2. How do you make a living?
I was very fortunate to be able to use some recent contacts I had in the music industry and land a job 2 weeks after I moved. I wasn't planning on it happening so soon, but it did! I work at some of the biggest music festivals in the UK as well as help run a vintage vinyl shop in the heart of Liverpool. Pretty much my dream job.

My name is Katie and I’m originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. After living in the Czech Republic and Switzerland, we moved to Kuala Lumpur a year ago.
1. Why did you move abroad?
I studied abroad in Prague during college, which is where I met the guy I ended up marrying. We moved back to the US and life went on until he was offered a job in Prague in early 2008. Because Prague holds a lot of good memories for us and we had a built-in social network there we were more than happy to move back. As the recession hit and cuts started to be made at his company he saw the writing on the wall and began looking for another job. He found one at a fantastic company that took us to Geneva. Two years after that the husband was asked to do an international assignment in Kuala Lumpur, which is where we are now.
