From Surrey to Minneapolis to Dubai: Circles in the Sand From Surrey to Minneapolis to Dubai: Circles in the Sand

Erin Erin  Date 30 August, 2012 09:01

circles in the sand desertI write under the pseudonym Dubaiunveiled, because when we moved to the Middle East in 2008 I realised there are lots of misconceptions about this region of the world (“Will you have to wear a veil?” was one of the questions I was asked before moving). I’m originally from Surrey in the UK, but we relocated to the UAE from Minneapolis in the US.

1. Why did you move abroad?
My husband, a pilot, is responsible for all our moves! He’s American (I’m British), so I eloped with him to Florida five days after marrying. We spent about five years in the US, before moving to Dubai so he could fly bigger airplanes. We like to keep things interesting – and sunshine.

De Barcelona a Abu Dhabi: Abu Phampi De Barcelona a Abu Dhabi: Abu Phampi

Erin Erin  Date 27 August, 2012 10:12

From New York City to Moscow: Impressions of an Expat From New York City to Moscow: Impressions of an Expat

Erin Erin  Date 23 August, 2012 10:34

Marco from New York, now living in Moscow.Impressions of an expat marco

1. Why did you move abroad?
I am an involuntary expat, as my daughter was kidnapped from the USA to Russia when she was two. That was five years ago. I could not imagine being separated from her, so life for the foreseeable future is in Moscow.

2. How do you make a living?
I run an International creative agency and design studio out of the USA, where I had worked for about twenty years. Every job is different. Every client is different. I work in about 14 time zones, and never know what people are going to ask me to create – one day a viral film, the next a children’s toy.

From the USA to China to Singapore to Paris: Expat Edna From the USA to China to Singapore to Paris: Expat Edna

Erin Erin  Date 20 August, 2012 10:24

expat edna I’m Edna, an American and serial expat. I first moved abroad at 18, then two weeks after graduating university in 2010, I left the US for good. I have lived and worked in China and Singapore, and am currently based in Paris.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Different reasons each time. At 18, I moved to China for a year and a half as a break from my small-town college life and to broaden my horizons. At 21, I moved to Singapore on a whim because I had just graduated and knew that I didn’t want to stay in the US. In January of this year, I moved to Paris to follow an opportunity to further my career.

From Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City: Channel Steve From Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City: Channel Steve

Erin Erin  Date 16 August, 2012 10:58

channel steve Hi, My name is Steve. I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia and I moved to Ho Chi Minh City in 2009.

1. Why did you move abroad?
After 13 years in a giant corporate, serving internal and external IT customers in various ways, I found myself increasingly dissatisfied (with life?), but not sure why. I wangled a severance package during a huge corporate restructure, which allowed me the luxury of a long overseas trip. I chose Asia because we have so many Asians in Melbourne, but because they tend to keep to themselves I knew nothing about them.

Seven countries and 53 days later I came home, having fallen in love with Vietnam and Japan, but not knowing if I would ever see those places again. I started a new job, but remained unhappy. A few weeks later I read that my favorite metal band, Judas Priest, was playing the Budokan in Tokyo. This is one of those iconic gigs that most people only ever dream of attending, but I was determined to make it happen. A rather spontaneous trip ensued, leading me back to Japan, with Vietnam added for good measure as well. It was after that trip I knew I needed to live in Vietnam. I undertook a TESOL course, hooked up with a local agency, sold my house, ended my 10-year relationship and moved. Crazy, you say? Maybe so. I am now much more satisfied with life, though.

De Nice à Montréal: CindyChou à Montréal De Nice à Montréal: CindyChou à Montréal

Erin Erin  Date 13 August, 2012 09:39

(More)

From Paris to London: Britishette From Paris to London: Britishette

Erin Erin  Date 09 August, 2012 10:07

Britishette Hi I’m Jo, aka Britishette on my blog. I’m a 33 year old Parisian girl who loves to move around. With my Austrian hubby Chris, we lived in Seattle, New York, Vienna, Tokyo and Paris. As our little girl Stella turned 1, we packed our bags again and crossed the channel to experiment the London life. Can’t believe how things are different just a train ride away!

1. Why did you move abroad?
I love to live abroad. I am so curious about the daily life of people in other countries. I get excited just visiting the supermarket. So when my husband was asked to relocate to London for work, I didn’t hesitate for one second. We had been in England before, but never to live, and I think it is such a different experience to settle in a new country. The love of football, of crazy fashion and pubs convinced us to get on the Eurostar. (More)

From the USA to Auckland: Practically Perfect... From the USA to Auckland: Practically Perfect...

Practically Perfect Jenny Tucker – originally from the US, currently living in Auckland, New Zealand

1. Why did you move abroad?
My husband was looking for career opportunities, and we both agreed that we would consider certain countries outside of the US.  We saw one that was being advertised by a New Zealand employer and as the job was very much in line with his interests and expertise, he applied.  He was flown over for an interview, loved the job, really liked the city, and so was happy to accept once they made an offer.
