From South Africa to England to Australia: Proudly South African In Perth
I’m Reeva, originally from South Africa. I moved to England back in 2003 and lived there for 10 years until I decided to migrate to Australia in 2013. We now live in Perth and absolutely love it here!
1. Why did you move abroad?
When I moved from South Africa to England it was because I had finished university and had no idea what sort of job I would be able to find. I had also had my car stolen a couple of months before my final exams and that was the last straw for me. I qualified for a visa for the UK so moved to England where I already had family living. In 2011 my husband and I decided to look at moving to Australia as we wanted to live somewhere sunny and warm!
2. How do you make a living?
I work in digital marketing and run the Proudly South African In Perth blog (although that’s for love not money!). Gaining knowledge of all things digital gave me the confidence to start my own blog.
3. How often do you communicate with home and how?
I talk to friends and family all over the world all the time. I mostly phone, use Skype or Facetime and Whatsapp is great too.
4. What's your favorite thing about being an expat in Perth?
The sun! Being able to plan things without having to panic about the weather (most of the time anyway). Being so close to the beach is also amazing, it’s my happy place and we go there all the time in the warmer months and sometimes in winter too if it’s not raining.
5. What’s the worst thing about being an expat in Perth?
The time difference when you want to speak to family and friends, it does make it hard.
6. What do you miss most?
I miss family and friends, and the history of the UK. Everything here is just so new. When we went back to the UK last year I just wanted to see everything historical! From SA there isn’t that much physical that I miss besides people. I do miss Cape Town though and all its beauty, the mountain, the beaches, the winelands. There really is no place like it.
7. What did you do to meet people and integrate in your new home?
I started a Facebook group! And that lead to meeting a lot of people and making some amazing friends.
8. Is the cost of living higher or lower than the last country you lived in and how has that made a difference in your life?
Some things are more expensive like rent/mortgage payments, some are cheaper, like petrol. I compare to the UK as that’s where we moved from. I think it’s a lot more expensive than South Africa but then you are earning heaps more so it all balances out. Once you are earning dollars you have to stop converting and just go with it – it costs what it costs!
9. What advice would you give other expats?
Just do it! It’s absolutely terrifying but so worth it in the end – if you come with the right attitude.
10. When and why did you start your blog?
I started a Facebook group in 2013 and once we reached 3000 members I took the plunge and started a blog. I had been creating all this content for the group and thought why not try and reach a wider audience? I love creating new content and promoting local businesses and events within the community and am so glad I did start my blog!
