From the UK to Malaysia: The Stay Abroad Dad

09 December, 2019 08:14  Erin Erin

I am Dave, I'm originally from the UK and now I live in Malaysia with my wife Ruth and our two young children.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
In 2010, (our pre-kids days) we took the opportunity to leave the recession behind and go and work in schools in South Korea for a year. It was brilliant but we both agreed it would be a 12 month thing and we would return to the UK afterwards to pick up our careers where left off. We both had good jobs but we always had itchy feet because of our time in South Korea. In 2018, an advert for a job in Malaysia unexpectedly appeared in my wife's spam email folder. She jokingly said 'should I apply for it?'. We'd both had a pretty terrible day at work and felt like we needed to do something whilst the kids were young and before we fall into the trap of going 'through the motions' of everyday life. So, a few interviews and car boot sales later, we said our goodbyes and got on the plane!

From the Philippines to Singapore to New Zealand: Notes From Our Corner

18 November, 2019 12:20  Erin Erin

Notes From Our Corner Hi there. My name is Aileen, I am originally from the Philippines, and lived in Singapore for almost 10 years. I am now currently living with my husband and two girls in Wellington, New Zealand.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
My husband and I had been living and working in Singapore for almost a decade. We wanted to make sure we have a good work-life balance in order to take care of the kids that we plan to have at that time, and we knew that the pace of life in Singapore would not be sustainable for us in the long-term. Immigration policies in Singapore were tightening at that time as well, and we were concerned our Employment Passes will not be approved (both our PR applications were rejected), so we wanted to go to a country where we could be permanent residents and eventually, citizens.

We first looked to Australia, but fortunately, the company where my husband worked in Singapore offered him a job transfer to New Zealand, and so this is where we are now.

2.    How do you make a living?
I was an IT professional in Singapore. When we moved to New Zealand in 2016, I was a stay-at-home mom right up until 2018, when I went back to the workforce. I now work as a contractor for various companies as  Programme Coordinator.

From Hong Kong to Germany: My Life In Germany

04 November, 2019 12:00  Erin Erin

my life in germanyI am Sindy. I am originally from Hong Kong and now live in Germany. I have a German husband, a toddler and also two cats. We live in a small town with less than 20,000 people nearby Munich.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I was born in Hong Kong and grew up there. Like many people, I had a very normal life in Hong Kong. I went to school, then university, then I found a job and started working in Hong Kong. Going to work, hating my job, working overtime and overtime, going home and sleep, and the days were repeating.

I was not happy. I knew this was not what I wanted. Not the job I like, not the environment and culture that I would like to live in.

I had a dream, to see other places, to do something that not most people are doing. To do something “not normal”. To chase for my dream. To find the meaning of life. Finally, in 2010, I made up my mind. I quit my job and enrolled in a master's program at a German University. This was the decision that changed my life, forever.

From Australia to Canada: Horizon Unknown

21 October, 2019 11:49  Erin Erin

Horizon Unknown Canada My name is Ben McLaughlan, I’m Australian living in Edmonton, Canada. Not the typical place for Australians to settle down, that’s for sure!

1. Why did you move abroad?
In 2013, I was bored. It was the same schedule, week in week out. Same job, same places to go out. It’s a fairly common term to be “stuck in a rut", and that’s exactly where I was.

So, I booked a one-way ticket through Europe and met my partner, Melanie, in Prague, Czech Republic. By the end of 2013, I was living in Canada with a work permit and a job.

It was a huge shift in my plans to travel and work through the United Kingdom, to living in Canada – but that’s how it played out.

From Saint-Malo to Sweden: The Northern Itinerary

07 October, 2019 11:37  Erin Erin

The Northern ItineraryI am Héloïse, 23 years old and originally from Saint-Malo, a beautiful city on the North-West coast of France. I moved to Sweden about 3 years ago and I am now living in Stockholm.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
I first moved abroad to study. After finishing my bachelor’s degree (International Business), I wanted to have a broader experience abroad. So I applied to Lund University for a master’s program (Service Management and Logistics). After the master I found a job, and I am still abroad now!

2.    How do you make a living?
I have been working for the last 20 months. I was not even done studying when I started to work. This is the main reason why I moved from Helsingborg to Stockholm. I first started to work at the container terminal of the port of Stockholm and now I am working for a shipping line. Still in sea freight and shipping!

De la France Ă  Whitehorse, au Yukon (Canada) : Lily's road

11 September, 2019 08:00  Expat Interviews Expat Interviews

Kelly - lilysroad.comJe m’appelle Kelly.

(More)

From the UK to Hong Kong: Afaranwide

09 September, 2019 11:24  Erin Erin

Afranwide We’re Colin Simpson and Sue Brattle and we run the Afaranwide travel blog. We’re from the UK and have been married for nearly 25 years. We’re both journalists, and worked on national newspapers in London for many years.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
Twelve years ago we felt it was time for a change, and we wanted to experience life in another country. We’d always loved travelling, so it seemed a natural step to take. We went to Dubai first and had spells in Saudi Arabia, the US, the Seychelles and France before going to Beijing. We moved from there to Hong Kong four years ago.

28 August, 2019 08:00  Expat Interviews Expat Interviews

L'élan blanc - CatherineJe m’appelle Catherine, j’ai 38 ans.

14 August, 2019 08:00  Expat Interviews Expat Interviews

Von Deutschland in die Schweiz: About Swiss

29 July, 2019 17:18  Erin Erin

Maik About Swiss Hoi Zäme.
