2. ¿Cómo se gana la vida?
Soy ingeniera forestal y comunicadora ambiental.

08 February, 2018 08:00  Expat Interviews Expat Interviews

From Toronto to Düsseldorf: Life in Düsseldorf

05 February, 2018 08:59  Erin Erin

Life in DusseldorfMy name is Jenna Davis, I am a 26-year-old Canadian expat originally from Toronto, Ontario and now living in Düsseldorf, Germany.

1. Why did you move abroad?
I moved abroad for a reason that many other expats around the world might also be familiar to. I moved for love. I met my (German) husband almost 6 years ago while I was backpacking across South Africa during my very first press trip as an international travel blogger (I’ve now visited more than 50 countries). Two years later, I decided to make the big leap, quitting my marketing job in the city and moving to Germany to see how our relationship would blossom. So far, so good!

From London to Bulgaria: Bulgarian Slivatree

29 January, 2018 09:21  Erin Erin

Bulgarian Slivatree Hello Everybody,
May I introduce myself? My name is Martin, originally from London and now living a better life in the City of Yambol in Southeast Bulgaria. I have been with my lovely Bulgarian partner Galia since meeting her in 2006.

1. Why did you move abroad?
The main reasons were to escape from the UK and move to a place that suited my ideals. Namely, living economically without being suppressed by materialistic wants and living a life without waste away from a throwaway society. My ideals are akin to the way of life for most Bulgarians in Bulgaria albeit my choice and opposed to no choice for many Bulgarians.

1.    Why did you move abroad?
My husband and I moved together to the Bay Area because we were sharing a common dream, living and working in the United States. He was the one who got a job here, so it made it easier for us to come.

Without hesitating a second, we left everything behind us, and decided to fly for the Silicon Valley!

From London to Toronto: I Spy Pretty Places

15 January, 2018 10:30  Erin Erin

I spy pretty placesVan, I'm from London, England and I am currently living in Toronto.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Originally in search of a different lifestyle with better work-life balance.

2. How do you make a living?
I work in Education. In previous countries I have worked in international schools. In Canada, I haven't found work as a teacher but in a related field.  It's always an adjustment working in a new country. Employment practices don't always match up with what you are used to back home. I've always enjoyed getting to know the families I have worked with and the children have just been amazing. Children are children no matter where they are in the world.

From New Jersey to France: France, Food, Scooters and More

01 January, 2018 11:38  Erin Erin

Ira France My name is Ira. I was born and raised on a dirt road in rural northern New Jersey surrounded by cow pastures and corn fields marked off by stone walls built when the fields were first cultivated starting a couple of centuries ago. (Yes, there were such places in New Jersey 60 years ago. And there still are!) My wife Cathey, a Texas girl, and I lived in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania for about 40 years before retiring to the small village of Quarante in the rural south of France where we are surrounded by vineyard after vineyard, marked off by stone walls built when the vineyards were first cultivated more than ten centuries ago. Karma.

1. Why did you move abroad?
Cathey and I like to travel. We’d driven around the Lower 48 extensively, visited Mexico a few times, and vacationed in the Caribbean. As we got older, we began to explore Europe. When we turned 50, we started thinking seriously about our retirement. What did we want to do? Travel. Where did we want to travel? Europe. Why not live there? Being from Texas, Cathey had had enough of winters in the Northeast. “I will never shovel snow again!” So we decided on a Mediterranean climate. When we visited the south of France, the region that used to be called the Languedoc but is now Occitanie, we knew we’d found our place. And no snow! Well, a dusting every year or two where we live. But it melts by itself after ten minutes.

2. How do you make a living?
I’m retired…mostly…living primarily on our Social Security retirement benefits. I spent the fifteen years before retirement as the development director for a nonprofit that addresses homelessness and mental health issues. I continue to do a bit of grant writing for them as a telecommuter. And, of course, I blog. Before that, Cathey and I ran a mass-market floral business, selling premade bouquets to grocery stores, minimarkets, and a string of street vendors. But mostly, I’m retired.
